Hey, I'm Monica.
I live in Milwaukee with my husband of twelve years, our sweet four-year-old son, and our new baby boy. We're Wisconsinites, born and raised, but we spend as much winter as we can in Southern California, a part of the world that’s always felt more like home to me than anywhere else.
I’m a recovering people-pleaser, in that I’ve spent a lot of my life doing things that made sense to and for other people. The silver lining is that I’ve done lots of things…
I have counted - and accounted for - more cash than most people will ever see in their lifetime. I’ve had defensive handgun training in the darkness of the Nevada desert and got a perfect score on my motorcycle skills test. I have a black belt in kickboxing (don’t be too impressed - I was twelve), and I sang the national anthem live on ESPN (be impressed - I spent the whole day in tears of terror). I can do your makeup like a pro and get you on the best-dressed list for any red carpet occasion you may attend. Hosting an event? I can plan and execute your six-figure affair, choreograph the entertainment, and handletter your invitations. Starting a business? I can design your logo, create your website, and get you on the morning news.
Though all of those skills and experiences are part of the person I’ve become, none of them are really “me.” So who am I really, without the performance and the peacocking? That’s what I’ve spent the last decade of my life trying to figure out. Who am I? What do I want? What do I value? How do I know?
In my years as a personal image consultant, I've sat with hundreds of women (including some admirable men) discussing outer beauty and personal style, and it doesn't take long to see that outer change is connected to inner work. And I’ve learned a lot - not just about my individual clients, but about myself, human behavior, personality, and this journey called life.
When someone asks that “who am I?” question, I like to ask "What’s always been true of you?" I have always been an advisor, a refiner, an innovator. I have always been a writer. I’m the one my friends tap for business and career advice. I love transformations, startups, and Cinderella stories. I crave mocktails, sunshine, topography, and crazy-out-of-nowhere thunderstorms. I love to laugh and make others laugh. And I really love cats.
Do you ever ask yourself that - “Who am I really?” Maybe you’re a multipotentialite, polymath, jill-of-all trades renaissance woman and your life looks something of a mishmash like mine. Maybe you’ve been on a path that’s bored you for the last ten years - or one that just doesn’t get you firing on all cylinders. Maybe you’re a stay-at-home mom for whom that question is only wondered silently in the middle of the night. Boy do I get it.
If these thoughts resonate with you, then you are my people. Follow me on Facebook or sign up for my email list and let’s keep in touch. I’ve traveled this path, and I’m here to throw you a line.
